Taking a new pet home can be an exciting time in someone’s life. Having an animal can bring joy and comfort into the home. Although getting a new pet can be an exciting experience, there is a wrong way to go about it. Because so many people love animals and having a pet, there are breeding facilities that will mass produce animals to meet demands. These breeding facilities are known as puppy mills. Puppy mills mistreat animals by mass breeding, leaving them extremely sick and abused:

No Preventive Veterinary Care

Dogs and cats need constant veterinary care, especially in their early months. It’s important for puppies and kittens to stay as healthy as possible when they are first born and receive the care they need to survive. Unfortunately for animals born in mass breeding facilities or puppy mills, they will hardly ever receive the care they need to live a long and healthy life. Pets born in puppy mills are often faced with severe health issues that put a hindrance or even drastically shorten their life.

Cramped Living Arrangements

In puppy mills, animals are crammed into tight cages with little to no social interaction. This kind of mistreatment of animals can lead to more than just horrifying health issues. This type of living situations the animals suffer through can lead to emotional issues. Often times, puppies won’t know how to enjoy their new home and families due to the severe mistreatment and abuse from the puppy mills. They also sometimes do not know how to interact with other animals and face a variety of social issues.

What We Can Do

In order to stop the mistreatment of animals and put a stop to puppy mills, people must take action. It’s important to become an advocate and work to pass laws in your own community to help improve the lives of animals in puppy mills. It’s also important to contact your legislators to voice your concerns against the mistreatment of animals in puppy mills. When contacting your federal legislators, ask them to expand the reach of the Animal Welfare Act to include kennels that sell mass amounts of puppies directly to the public.

It’s imperative to be aware of the abuse and mistreatment animals face in puppy mills and take action to bring the inhumanity to a stop.
