For years, animals have been the victims of many forms of cruel testing. These kinds of medical and scientific testing often times harm the animals in unimaginable ways. Cosmetics, in particular, is one of the worst types of testing an animal suffers through. Due to the abuse and mistreatment animals are faced with, cosmetics testing on animals must come to an end.
The Death Toll
Although makeup and other beauty products may seem harmless, they can be deadly to animals. Humane Society International estimates that 100,000–200,000 animals lose their lives every year from cosmetic testing. Through testing, animals have chemicals shoved down their throats, into their eyes, and directly on to their sensitive skin. The tests are given to determine if a chemical is hazardous, can cause general illness, or is deadly. These types of tests often lead to the death of the animal.
Lack of Scientific Credibility
The whole point of testing cosmetics and chemicals on animals is to determine if it will affect humans. More often than not, humans and animals will react differently to certain types of chemicals. Due to this fact, animal testing is often useless. Often times, animal testing can be unreliable and non-predictive, leaving consumer safety unguaranteed. With such a lack of scientific credibility, there can be no point in testing cosmetics on animals. They are facing mistreatment, abuse, and often death over an experiment that may not even work.
There is absolutely no need for animals to suffer through cosmetics testing. There have been many other ways of safely testing makeup and other beauty products. New products can be easily produced by simply manufacturing the cruelty-free way. There are thousands of ingredients that are widely known to be safe and will require no testing from animals. Today, there are over 40 non-animal tests that have been validated for use. These modern alternatives are able to give more accurate results for humans, are much more cost-effective, and less time-consuming.
Taking a Stand
In order to bring animal testing to an end, people have to start taking a stand. Ways to do this is by always buying cruelty-free products, donating to organizations fighting again animal testing, voicing your concerns to federal officials, and educating others. Cosmetics testing on animals must come to an end and it’s imperative for everyone to start taking action against the animal cruelty.
